Casco Bay Voice Weekend #3 — November 6–9, 2026

Handmade holidays start in South Portland
A handmade bowl, a warm scarf or an ornament chosen straight from its maker can make a gift feel personal. This weekend’s South Portland Craft Show brings that kind of browsing to South Portland High School, 637 Highland Avenue.

The juried show runs Saturday, November 7, 9 AM–4 PM, and Sunday, November 8, 10 AM–3 PM. Admission is free. The Society of Maine Crafters’ current schedule confirms both days and hours.

Bring a short gift list, take your time and talk with the makers about their work. It’s an indoor option for a weekend with rain in the forecast. Show details

from-sandy — Casco Bay Voice

Good morning, neighbors.

A craft table in South Portland, a bookshop in Yarmouth and a little music in Portland give us several ways to make a November weekend feel less gray. Freeport has an early start to holiday shopping, too.

I hope you’ll invite someone along. And when you have a quiet moment, listen to my conversation with Patricia Nielsen of The Furniture Gallery. Her experience growing up in a Maine family business makes a good companion to a weekend spent shopping locally.

WORTH LISTENING | MAINE THRIVE VOICES

Maine Thrive Voices Episode 17 — Patricia Nielsen, The Furniture Gallery — Bigger Doesn’t Always Mean Better

Patricia Nielsen of The Furniture Gallery — Episode 17

If you’ve browsed The Furniture Gallery’s Windham store, this conversation introduces you to the family behind that local shopping stop. Patricia Nielsen grew up in the business, starting out sweeping the warehouse. Today, she helps lead the company her father built from a handful of small mattress shops.

Patricia talks candidly with Sandy about working beside her dad, the two things shoppers get wrong about furniture, and why, in her words, “selling furniture is the easy part.” For Casco Bay and Lakes Region neighbors furnishing a home—or simply interested in how a Maine family business grows—her stories offer a closer look at the people behind the showroom.

Before your next visit to the Windham store, spend a little time with Patricia’s story.

A handmade gift and a book chosen for someone you know well can mean a great deal. So can inviting a neighbor to a show or making time to sit and listen.

That is what I hope you find in this weekend’s choices: one or two plans that feel worth leaving the house for, and a little room for good company.
