Mast Landing Sanctuary: A Woodland Walk in Freeport |
An estuary-side escape beyond the shopping streets |

A short trip beyond Freeport’s shopping streets brings a quieter kind of outing. Mast Landing Audubon Sanctuary, 65 Upper Mast Landing Road, protects 145 acres of woodland and estuary habitat, with more than three miles of trails.
November is a good month to notice the shape of a landscape: the edge of the tidal water, the trunks beyond the fallen leaves and the way a wooded path turns away from the road. You don’t need to make it a long hike to give it your attention.
The sanctuary is free and open sunrise to sunset year-round. Trails are for foot traffic; dogs are prohibited except qualifying service animals. Roots, rocks and slopes call for suitable footwear, and the paths should not be assumed to be accessible to every visitor.
For readers north of Portland, this is a nearby escape. For the rest of the Bay, it makes a useful stop on a Freeport day trip. |
